Awhile ago I received the following message on tumblr from a nice young lady by the user name of shelby-f :
“I don’t know if you are still around on tumblr or not, but I was wondering if you would be willing to explain how you speak with the gods and how you started to. I’m looking to have a better connection with them and communicate with them better in my daily life. “
Well Shelby-f, I’m not on Tumblr much anymore, but I do have an answer for you.
I can’t really tell you how I started communicating with gods and spirits. There wasn’t a definitive start to it, part of me thinks that I may have always been “Awake” to things like this. As I child I talked to the Fair Folk, to trees, to rocks, to ghosts, and to what at the time I thought must have been either God or His angels. (I was raised Catholic) When I was about 11 I started to look into Paganism and everything snowballed from there. Nothing changed about my practices on and deep level. Oh sure I used tarot cards now, and I lit candles and incense in my room instead of carrying them down the aisle in church. (That’s right, I was an alter server) But I still found it easy to talk to the world around me, I just addressed my conversation to different gods.
So much for how I got started, now on to the real question. . . How do you talk to the gods?
Well, you just do. Talking to the gods isn’t something that someone can really teach you, it something that will only work for you if you do it your own way. It’s a natural process that you just need to play around with and find the way that works for you.
The best advise I can give to anyone is to just go for it. Just start talking, or thinking, or feeling at them; someone will be listening. If you want a particular someone you should preface your thoughts, feelings, or words with their name, or an invocation to them, or even just the way they make you feel. You can talk to them aloud, like another person in the room; you can talk to them in your thoughts, like another person in your head. Just talk to them. Don’t be shy. Gods are people too. Be respectful but not deferential, if a god wants you to bow and scrap they’ll tell you, otherwise, in my experience, it just annoys them.
You could try giving them a gift or offering. Read their myths and see what they like. Sometimes you may just have a gut feeling that a certain god likes a certain thing. For instance, the Horned One loves apples, in almost any form he can get it in, but a particular favorite of his is apples with a sharp white cheddar cheese. This isn’t mentioned anywhere in myth, but I went with my gut and it always paid off.
In short, just go for it, talking is easy. It’s the Hearing that’s the hard part.
Sounded nice in the Google search, but now I’m here I can’t read a thing! Please reconsider your colour scheme, it has close to zero contrast between background and text!
Thank you for pointing this out to me, something had gone wonky with the theme, and needed to be fixed. It should be all better now.
